Civil Engineering Jobs in Nepal for Freshers (2026 Guide)

You just finished your BE in civil engineering. Now comes the big question. Where are the civil engineering jobs in Nepal for freshers?

Here is the short answer. Most of these jobs are in private consultancies, construction firms, hydropower projects, and government offices. Most freshers earn about Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 a month in private firms. A government engineer starts at a basic salary of Rs 48,058 in 2083/84.

But there is one step you can't skip. You must pass the Nepal Engineering Council licence exam first.

This guide covers it all. You will learn who hires freshers, what they pay, and how to get a Lok Sewa job. You will also learn which skills help you stand out.

Where Do Fresh Civil Engineers Get Jobs in Nepal?

Nepal is still building roads, bridges, dams, and towns. That means civil engineers are needed in many places. Here are the main places that hire freshers.

1. Engineering consultancies

Consultancies plan and design projects. As a fresher, you will draw plans, check designs, and write reports. You will also visit sites to collect data. This is a great place to learn design software fast.

2. Construction companies

Builders need site engineers. You will check daily work, keep records, and make sure the work follows the design. The job is tough, but you learn a lot in a short time.

3. Hydropower projects

Nepal has many rivers, so hydropower is a big field. Fresh engineers help with dams, tunnels, and powerhouses. Many sites are in remote hills. They often pay extra for that. Read our take on why Nepal must rethink hydropower design.

4. Government offices

The government is the biggest employer of civil engineers. Jobs are in federal offices, the seven provinces, and 753 local levels. Big hirers include the Department of Roads and the Nepal Electricity Authority. These jobs require a Lok Sewa exam. We explain it below.

5. Municipalities on contract

Many municipalities hire engineers on short contracts. These jobs don't always need a Lok Sewa exam. They are a good way to get early work in your hometown.

6. NGOs and development projects

Some NGOs build schools, water systems, and homes. Donor-funded road and housing projects hire civil engineers too. These jobs often ask for strong English and report writing.

7. Real estate and housing

Housing firms and private builders need engineers for design checks and site work. City growth in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Pokhara keeps these jobs coming.

Civil Engineering Salary in Nepal for Freshers

Your first salary depends on where you work. Government pay is fixed by law. Private pay depends on the firm, the city, and your skills.

Where you work

Starting pay per month

Government engineer (officer level, 2083/84)

Rs 48,058 basic, about Rs 57,900 with allowances

Loksewa Tayari, from the Ministry of Finance scale

Private firms (all of Nepal)

Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000

Necojobs, May 2026

Private firms in Kathmandu

Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000

Kumarijob, Dec 2025

The government figure adds a 10% incentive and a Rs 5,000 dearness allowance to the basic pay. You also get one month's basic pay as a Dashain bonus each year.

Remote hydropower and road sites often pay more. Ask about site allowance, food, and housing before you say yes.

Pay grows fast after the first two or three years. Engineers who learn design software and get their licence early move up quicker.

Government Jobs: How the Lok Sewa Exam Works

A government job gives you a fixed salary, a pension path, and job security. That is why many fresh civil engineers aim for it.

With a BE degree, you apply for the Engineer post. In the civil service, this is a gazetted third-class officer post. It is the same level as a section officer.

There are three kinds of Lok Sewa:

  • Federal: run by the Public Service Commission for central offices like the Department of Roads.
  • Provincial: each of the seven provinces has its own commission and its own vacancies.
  • Local level: municipality posts, often filled through the provincial commission.

Here is how to apply:

  1. Get your NEC licence. Most engineering posts ask for it.
  2. Watch for vacancy notices on the commission websites.
  3. Fill out the online form and pay the fee before the deadline.
  4. Pass the written exam. It has two papers on general and technical topics.

Pass the interview.

Start with the Lok Sewa civil engineer syllabus. Most of the technical paper comes from what you studied in your BE. So keep your notes from college. If you are still in our BE Civil program, start your Lok Sewa prep in the final year.

Get Your NEC Licence Before Your First Job

In Nepal, you can't work as an engineer without a licence. The Nepal Engineering Council Act, 2055 says so. Since 2023, you must pass a written exam to get it.

The exam is not easy. In the first sitting, only 28.5% of candidates passed. The pass mark is 50 out of 100. Edusanjal reported these numbers in March 2023. In June 2023, the pass rate was still only about 34%.

The good news? The council now holds the exam about four times a year. You can see the dates in the NEC exam calendar for 2082/83. So if you fail once, you can try again in a few months.

Tips to pass on your first try:

  • Revise your core subjects: structures, soil, surveying, hydraulics, and estimating.
  • Practise past questions and timed mock tests.
  • Learn the engineering laws and ethics topics. Many students skip them and lose easy marks.
  •  Apply in the normal window. The late window costs double.

Skills That Help Freshers Get Hired

A degree gets you an interview. Skills get you the job. Here is what employers look for in fresh civil engineers.

Almost every employer

ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE

Building and structure design

Consultancies, housing firms

Civil 3D

Soft skills matter too. Learn to write a clear site report. Practise speaking to workers, clients and officials. Be on time, every time. Site managers notice this more than grades.

You can build these skills while you study. Join a club, enter design contests and attend talks. Our Civil Club and events like CEISD-2026 put students in the same room as working engineers. Learn more about our Civil Engineering department.

Where to Find Civil Engineering Vacancies in Nepal

Jobs don't always come to you. Check these places every week:

  • Job websites: Merojob, Kumarijob, and Jobs Nepal post many site engineer and design jobs.
  • Lok Sewa websites: the Federal Public Service Commission and the provincial commissions.
  • Newspapers: many government and project notices still appear in Gorkhapatra.
  • Company websites: NEA, hydropower firms, and big contractors post jobs on their own sites.
  • LinkedIn: follow consultancies and send short, polite messages to engineers you admire.
  • Your college: seniors and teachers often hear about jobs first. Keep an eye on our Career page.

5 tips to land your first job

  1.     Do an internship. Even two months on site makes your CV stand out.
  2.     Keep a small portfolio. Add your best drawings, designs, and final-year project.
  3.     Write a one-page CV. Put software skills and site work at the top.
  4.     Apply early and often. Freshers who apply to 20 jobs get more calls than those who apply to 3.
  5.     Say yes to site work. A year on site teaches what no class can. It also makes your next job easier to get.
